Bank Holiday Weekend and it’s been confirmed the sun will be out! So time to get the BBQ’s out! Before you do – carry out a dynamic Fire Safety Risk Assessment and keep your family and friends safe!

Its not very often we have a Bank Holiday Weekend that promises the sunshine, so it is extremely likely that people will want to dust the old BBQ off and make the most of it! BUT there are considerations and here are just a few:

Traditional BBQ’s

  • Make sure your BBQ is well away from sheds, fences, trees, shrubs or garden waste.
  • Use enough charcoal to cover the base of the BBQ
  • Keep children, pets and garden games away from the cooking area
  • Empty ashes onto bare garden soil, not into dustbins or wheelie bins.
  • Never use petrol or paraffin to start or revive your BB
  • Always keep water nearby

Gas BBQ’s

  • Never store gas cylinders under the stairs
  • Store gas cylinders outside away from direct sunlight and frost
  • Make sure the tap is turned off before changing the gas cylinder
  • If you suspect a leak, turn off the gas cylinder and try brushing soapy water around all joints, watching for bubbles.
  • Change gas cylinders outdoors or in a well ventilated area

If you live in a London Purpose Built Block of Flats then you need to look at your Fire Safety Risk Assessment for the premise. Most Blocks of Flats do not allow the use of BBQ’s on the balconies because this would put the premise at High Risk.

It is always a great joy to revisit our client in Normandy France – visiting a beautiful Chateau to carry out an annual Fire Safety Inspection is never hard work!

On this particular occasion London Fire Risk Assessments Managing Director Clive Lewis TIFireE was accompanied by one of the Administration Team to check on some co-ordinating works. As they were staying for a couple of days we needed to find them some good accommodation in the area!

Car Workshop Fire in London Stratford thought to be caused by an Electric fault – Did their Fire Safety Risk Assessment identify if they had an up to date 5 Year Electrical Periodical Certificate?

London Fire Brigade have reported on their incident page that Six fire engines and 35 firefighters and officers dealt with a fire at a car repair workshop on Morris Road in Manor Park Stratford London.

Most of the workshop was damaged by Fire and one car was removed due to damage in the blaze. Gas cylinders were involved in the fire and a temporary hazard zone was set up around the affected area as a precaution, as some cylinders can explode when exposed to heat. The cause of the Fire is believed to be due to an Electrical fault. To read more click here.

London Fire Risk Assessments doesn’t know if the premise had a Fire Risk Assessment or if they did, if it identified that a 5 Year Electrical Periodical Certificate should be in place – BUT every London Workshop, Industrial Unit, Warehouse, Storage Units, Factory should have an up to date Fire Safety Risk Assessment for their premise.

Many of the above premises will have hazardous substances and it is imperative that they have a ‘suitable and sufficient’ Fire Safety Risk Assessment. A competent person, qualified to do the job should carry out the Fire Safety Inspection.

London Fire Risk Assessments are qualified with the Institution of Fire Engineers and all their Fire Risk Assessors are retired London Fire Brigade Fire Safety Officers. We are an independent Risk Assessment Company so you can be sure our recommendations and advice is completely unbiased.
