It’s the season to be jolly but lets take a few moments out to think of people that are less fortunate. 

There are so many people that may need our help – lonely neighbours, families looking after loved ones that are sick, our homeless.

Please help London Fire Risk Assessment in supporting one wonderful charity the Royal Trinity Hospice wpoynnm. They have released a single ‘Say It In The Living Years’ sang by the London Hospices Choir and featuring Paul Carrack to celebrate their 125th Birthday.

The challenge is to make this superb song No 1 in the charts.

The Royal Trinity Hospice touched our hearts many years ago whilst looking after a family member. All the Staff are angels and it’s the most beautiful caring place to end your day. There are so many Hospices that provide the same wonderful environment and are rarely acknowledged for their work – until we need them.

Getting ready for the festive season! Time to test those Christmas Tree lights!!!

It’s the season to be jolly ……….. time to get your home ready for the festivities.

Don’t take any risks, your family is too important to take chances, check the Christmas Tree lights before you put them up!!

How old are they? Do they have any signs of overheating? Are the wires showing any cracks or breaks? If so it’s time to replace them!

If you are a Property Management Company or a Residents Association and you want to decorate your Entrance Hall to your blocks of Flats – Check your Fire Risk Assessment for the premise as it may not allow extra Fire Loading on the means of escape. It you decide to go ahead check the lights – it may be cheaper in the long run to replace them!

Make sure the position of the Christmas Tree is not obstructing the means of escape and the Tree is not adjacent to any heaters.

The start of a New Year is the perfect time to carry out a Fire Safety prevention check on your workplace or home.

Before you put all the Christmas decorations away – check!

How old are those Christmas tree lights? Are there any bare wires or defective lights? If so it may be time to replace them.

Are there decorations that you keep year after year and never put up? Perhaps it time to recycle and give them to a charity shop for someone else to enjoy!

By reducing your storage you are reducing your Fire loading!!!

Electrical fires are common in both workplace premises and family homes and many can be avoided by following some simple actions:

  • Don’t use imitation electrical chargers as they may be unsafe
  • Make sure electrical appliances have a British or European safety mark
  • Unplug appliances and chargers when you are not using them and at night
  • Check you are using the correct fuses.
  • Keep to one plug per socket
  • If you use an adaptor, use a fused ‘in line’ type.
  • Completely unwind a cable drum extension lead before use.
  • Commercial premises should check that their 5 year Periodical Electrical test is up to date.
  • Test your Emergency lighting.

Remember: scorch marks, flickering lights, hot plugs and sockets, fuses that low or circuit-breakers that trip for no obvious reasons could be signs of loose or dangerous wiring. Don’t ignore it – act on it!

The London Fire Brigade state that “many fire deaths happen at night when most people are sleeping.”  That’s shocking and we all can do something about it!!!

Every home should have working smoke alarms that should wake you if a fire does break out but you can further reduce your risk by carrying out some simple checks before you go to bed – this is what London Fire Brigade suggest:

  • Close inside doors at night to stop a fire from spreading
  • Turn off and unplug electrical appliances unless they are designed to be left on, such as fridges and freezers
  • Do not leave electrical appliances such as mobile phones and tablet computers charging overnight
  • Check your cooker is switched off
  • Don’t leave the washing machine, tumble dryer or dishwasher on
  • Turn heaters off, rake out fires and put a fire guard in place
  • Put candles, incense sticks and oil burners out and never leave them burning when you are asleep
  • Make sure cigarettes are completely out – it’s best to wet them to be sure
  • Never smoke in bed
  • Make sure escape routes are clear of anything that could slow you down in an emergency
  • Keep door and window keys where everyone you live with can find themEnsure mobility aids are close to hand for those who require them.
